Disability is a fundamental part of our diverse human experience, shaping how we navigate the world. At CRN, our commitment lies in empowering individuals with disabilities to thrive in all aspects of life. During Disability Pride Month in July, we take a moment to reflect on the importance of fostering inclusivity and accessibility. It’s a time to celebrate the strengths and achievements of individuals with disabilities and stand up for their rights. Join us as we delve into the History of Disability Pride and learn how you can become an advocate for positive change. Read on to discover how you can make a meaningful impact.
The History of Disability Pride Month:
Disability Pride Month emerged from the disability rights movement, where individuals with disabilities fought for equal rights, accessibility, and inclusion. On July 26th, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed, marking a significant milestone in prohibiting discrimination against people with disabilities. Disability Pride Month was born out of this movement, with the goal of challenging societal stigmas and celebrating the diversity and strength of the disability community.
The celebration of Disability Pride Month serves multiple purposes. It provides an opportunity to recognize and honor the accomplishments and contributions of individuals with disabilities throughout history. It is a time to highlight the importance of disability rights, accessibility, and inclusivity in all aspects of society. Moreover, Disability Pride Month encourages empowerment, self-acceptance, and unity within the disability community and beyond.
Becoming an Advocate for Change:
As we commemorate Disability Pride Month, let’s also explore effective ways to advocate for change. First, you can find your elected officials using the link here. Once you are ready to make your voice heard, follow these three tips:
3 Effective Tips for Writing Your Elected Officials
- Personalize Your Message: Share your unique experiences! Explain the significance of continued funding to sustain and enhance these vital programs. Highlight the importance of your Direct Support Professional (DSP) and how their support has empowered your independence and enriched your life. Express gratitude for the assistance and opportunities provided by these programs. Your personal story and advocacy can make a difference in securing the resources needed to support individuals with disabilities.
- Call for Action: Clearly state the action you want your elected officials to take, such as supporting legislation, allocating funding, or advocating for policy changes. Encourage them to be proactive champions for disability rights and inclusion.
- Follow Up and Spread the Word: Consider following up with your elected officials to reiterate your key points or provide additional information. Encourage others to write to their representatives as well, amplifying our collective voices for positive change.
Join us throughout this month as we share inspiring stories, valuable resources, and more to help celebrate and embrace individuals with disabilities. And be sure Share this post to spread the message!
